In Late November, the New York Times wrote an article on alligator farms and the exotic industry. We thought we would share it with you since we get so many questions on our pricing and skins. We have taken ourselves out of the wholesale market because the prices got so crazy high for alligator bags. I still think it is crazy to spend over $50,000 on an alligator Birkin - whoops - I mean bag. I get it - they are addictive and fabulous but honestly it is a little crazy in price. We are able to lower our prices and extend the savings on directly to the client and not line the pockets of department stores. We are a small business and we love to help out our neighbors and friends in the industry. I believe after this article though that alligator prices will increase in 2010. RACELAND, La. — After five years, Tommy Fletcher and his alligator farming business are facing irreconcilable differences.

“It’s like a marriage,” he said. “It was a bumpy road, and then all of a sudden it was over.”

The alligator industry makes for an odd mix of hardy men on the bayou who smoke Camels and drive crumbling pickup trucks, and Paris and New York fashion setters who consider it reasonable to spend $12,000 on an alligator-strap watch.

This peculiar relationship worked well enough for decades, but it has soured as of late. Last year Louisiana farmers, who produce most of the world’s alligator skins, collected over 500,000 eggs from the wild. This year, for the first time, most farmers did not pick up any.

The economy is the lead culprit. Since the fall of 2008, even wealthy customers have begun balking at the price of alligator skin products, which can range from the expensive to the wildly expensive. Bumper crops in previous years, people in the industry say, left an oversupply just as the luxury market began to falter.

But some farmers insist that the newfound frugality of the Gucci set cannot by itself explain the absolute washout of the alligator business. More than a few are beginning to blame the practices of executives in the European fashion business.

“How can this industry fall out so quickly?” Stephen Bonnecarrere asked while tossing live alligators into bins at his father-in-law’s farm outside Houma. “It happened too fast.”

Since the 1980s, the State Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has worked with farmers to maintain the state’s alligator population, estimated at one million to two million.

Alligator farming is hard, messy, costly work, and the lifestyle could not be further from that of the eventual Bergdorf Goodman shopper browsing for a pair of alligator skin loafers. Farmers, often in father-son teams, mark alligator nesting sites from helicopters, then go into the swamps by boat to gather the eggs, fending off mama gators with a pole. (By law, 12 percent of the grown alligators are returned to the wild.)

The landowners are paid for the eggs, and it is expensive to raise an alligator once hatched. The big ones — those that could end up as lavender handbags — tend to bite one another, making the skins worthless. So roughly 9 of 10 alligators reach their demise when they are only about four feet long.

Stolid men wade into shallow tanks and pull the alligators out by hand. Biting happens. After the gators are killed with a stab to the brain, they are skinned and sorted: heads and claws for the French Quarter souvenir shops, meat for the Cajun restaurants, guts for turtles, dogs or anything else whose tastes run that way.

For decades, the skins would be sold to 10 or 15 independent, often family-owned tanneries around the world that specialized in reptile skin, or so-called exotics. The prices were generally good, even generous. Some farmers, the ones that ran big operations, made millions of dollars.

The tanneries in turn would sell to the high-end fashion houses like Cartier, Hermès and Gucci, and from there the alligator would end up wrapped around someone’s wrist.

But things changed. In the mid 1990s, Hermès began buying tanneries and, as of a couple of years ago, became the largest player in the exotic tannery business.

Hermès bought aggressively from the farmers, and is still buying, though recently at prices far lower than in the past and lower even than the price of raising an alligator. All of this could be attributed to a very bad market. Luxury watch sales, on which the farmers are hugely dependent, are off by as much as 25 percent. But farmers look at the situation and say something does not add up.

While the tanneries are offering farmers little for their raw product, citing the recession, fashion houses are complaining about the astronomical prices for tanned hides. Many labels are giving up and moving away from alligator altogether, and well-known luxury brands like Manolo Blahnik say it is increasingly difficult to make a profit on such an expensive product.

“Every time I go to Neiman Marcus and say every year the price is going up, they fight me tooth and nail,” said George D. Malkemus III, the president of Manolo Blahnik. “They say, ‘I’m not going to spend $4,000 for an alligator shoe.’ ”

If alligator is still popular but is simply unaffordable, asked Zachary Casey, who until three years ago owned one of the largest farms in the state, why are thousands of the reptiles sitting unwanted in Louisiana? And why have prices for the raw product dropped so low? He says Hermès is hoarding the skins, forcing other fashion houses to pay dearly and leaving the farmers with few other options.

Caroline Schwartz-Mailhe, a spokeswoman for Hermès, said in an e-mail message that the company bought only about a third of the skins produced in Florida, Georgia and Louisiana, far from a monopoly. Ms. Schwartz-Mailhe added that the continued aggressive buying from farmers was a way “to support them in these difficult times and to respond to Hermès’ increasing development in alligator skins.”

Recent signs suggest that the luxury market is rebounding, at least somewhat. But some of the smaller farms simply will not make it.

Mr. Fletcher has been losing $15,000 a month on his little farm off the highway here near Raceland, about 50 miles southwest of New Orleans. He found a python and a loggerhead turtle and is considering opening a roadside zoo for tourists. But the plan of making it big in alligators, which once seemed like a good idea, has left him heavily in debt.

“I guess it’s like being married to Miss America,” Mr. Fletcher said. “You get all the benefits of the hugs and kisses, but she’s mighty high maintenance.”

Many ask how the red carpet opportunities present themselves, so here's a little inside info as to how it all goes down. Stars and stylists make requests for bags the week of an event, but we never know who's wearing what until the rest of the world does watching Seacrest 'do his thing' on E!. FedEx boxes fly from our coast to theirs, and, voila! A fashion moment is made!

We can also report that the bag that Sandra carried on the red carpet has already been snapped up and will be carried next weekend at the first-ever benefit gala for The Blanton Museum in Austin, Texas. Like J.T. says, what comes around...goes around! In a good way, of course.

Why is one bag that is alligator so much more than yours and one is cheaper?

There is a great deal of confusion on this issue as the price and quality of alligator/crocodile items can vary widely, and we are going to try to help you figure this out.

We obtain our alligator mostly from Louisiana and the southern gulf coast regions from farms and through legally obtained alligators that are tagged and pulled off the land in September to help conservation. The value and quality of the leather can vary widely no matter where you get it from.

In general, American Alligator (which is used exclusively for all Alexandra Knight alligator products) skin is much nicer...with more symmetrical scale patterns, thicker and softer skin and with a smoother, three-dimensional feel than the typical crocodile skin. American Alligator skins typically command the highest prices and are the most sought after raw material of the most prestigious manufacturers of luxury items. While there is essentially only one species of alligator ( the "American Alligator" or " alligator mississippiensis"), there are a dozen species of crocodiles in varied shapes and sizes found all over the world. By far the most common is the Brown Caiman from Central and South America (widely used by some designer named Nancy). Most types of crocodile are either endangered or threatened, restricting commercial trade by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). The United States government recently initiated a crackdown on the illegal importation of protected species, and routinely confiscates goods shipped from suppliers overseas.

We only use Grade 1 or 1/2 alligator as well. There are some designers that will use "genuine american alligator," and their prices are resonantly lower. This is typically because they are using a lower grade skin - meaning the condition of the skin is worse off with more imperfections, scratches and sometimes holes.

I have a genuine crocodile bag and paid a lot less? Yes, and these items are often made from caiman crocodile. While caiman skins can be of good quality, caiman skin is relatively thinner due to the less sophisticated tanning processes on finished products from South America. It is often dryer, stiffer and less durable than even the lesser quality alligator skins. For a buyer, it is unfortunate that this dryness cannot be seen in photos. Caiman can often be identified by small pits in their scales, which is far more common in caiman relative to other crocodiles, and is non-existent in genuine alligator.

In addition to the species of alligator/crocodile, the quality of the skin varies from animal to animal and from what part of the body the skin is sourced. For smooth-skinned items, the premium sections include the central belly and throat areas where the scales are the largest, the most symmetrical around the center-line of the belly: these scales are somewhat rectangular in shape. The sides can also be very good quality; skin from the sides has scales that are more rounded in shape and the skin is a bit thinner. We use only bellies in our bags and refuse to seam and "piece together" parts to save on cost.

The size of the animal is also important. This can offer a clue to distinguish alligator from caiman, since caiman skins usually come from smaller animals (3 to 5 feet in length; compared to 6 to 12 feet for the typical American alligator). With a smaller donor animal the pattern and size of the scales transitions rapidly over the small area of the wallet or purse, such that the shape of the crocodile's body/head/tail is clearly apparent; this can be a good thing depending on the application. Many of our customers remark on the large scales on our bags. We always endeavor to use single skins where we can, which requires the 'big-daddy' gators widely found in the swamplands of Louisiana and Florida.

Hope this little bon mot better explains why your dream bag may take a while to manufacture. Being a smaller company that produces one-of-a-kind, couture bags right here in the USA forces us to be very picky when choosing our skins. Not just any gator will do! Thanks for the suggestion that we move to L.A., but we're happy right here in Houston, thank you very much. And, quite honestly, we have such an L.A. following that we find that it's not necessary. After all, we have just as much smog and traffic as they do!

We're feeling a little like a cross between Perez Hilton and a proud parent as we excitedly report that Oscar and Emmy nominated actress, Rachel Griffiths, toted our Large Magnolia clutch in chocolate brown glaze alligator on the Emmy red carpet last night. You may remember Rachel for her Golden Globe winning/Emmy nominated role in Six Feet Under, or like us, tune in on Sunday nights to watch her as Sarah Whedon on Brothers & Sisters. Although she didn't win Best Supporting Actress, she did take home the award for best-accessorized nominee!

We just unpacked NINE Pammie Pouches, and we wanted you to be the first to know! The Pammie was named after our dear friend, Leigh Williams, whose first name is Pamela. We discovered this secret when she ordered the nameplate for her first bag. Diet Coke shot through our both our noses upon hearing this news. We have no idea why this is funny, but it just is. Her nickname was born, and it stuck. Pammie! Always talking a mile a minute and clickity-clacking on her computer the entire time she is talking to us.

"Pammie", or Leigh as this town knows her (and our new office-mate as of October 1), decided that the bag formerly known as the 'XL Travel Pouch' is her signature bag. It is a clutch that holds her phone, credit card, driver's license, valet money, lipstick, powder and her precious La Mer lip balm all at once and looks fabulous at the same time. AND, the price point is perfect for a single gal on a budget. A budget that includes a 'tiny' discretionary fund for bags and shoes. She always says that this is the bag in our line that gets you the most bang for your buck, and we tend to agree with her.

While our goal for this little blog (which has surprisingly become quite fun for us) is pretty much all business, we've had a lot of requests for personal scoop on the designer. Although it's not really her thing to divulge much about her personal life, when pressed she did answer some questions that give you some insight into what gets her up in the morning, what drives her and what makes her tick. What do you regard to as the lowest depth of misery?
To be away from my kids

What is your idea of earthly happiness? To sail the Greek isles with my family and on board have copious amounts of food & wine coupled with endless sunsets

Who are your favorite heroines in real life? My mother, because she embodies beauty and love; my assistant Courtney, nick-named "The Wiz" because she has turned the business end of this company into Oz and lets me do what I do best - DESIGN and my best friends who teach me patience & loyalty.

Your favorite artist?
I am living for Kenneth Nolan right now and his use of color!

Your favorite Musician?
Would you laugh if I said Justin Timberlake?

I dragged my husband to his concert last year and acted like a 6th grader at my first concert.

I have a few! I am an incredibly obsessed perfectionist and complete workaholic. And patience is not my top virtue.

To have moved home right after college and never lived in NYC, and to have never had children!

Today? Navy - It changes daily!

Since my college days, I have had a Karl Lagerfeld quote that was cut from a magazine on his idea of happiness. I live by it daily, and it is next to me as I write this. "The secret to happiness is never compete, never compare." Genius, that man is.

What inspires me?
Everything! I am inspired by my clients, vintage designs, other designers, color, art, jewelry - really if it crosses my eye it becomes something - I created the Faye bag from my husband's beat up briefcase he got from his father!

What designers do I admire most?
John Paul Gaultier never ceases to amaze me by the way he can rework vintage Hermes and keep an old, established house new and fresh! Alber Elbaz at Lanvin is a genius, and Karl Lagerfeld just because of what he does and what he can do. How the hell does he do it all ???

How do you define glamour? Being comfortable in your own skin and radiating beauty from within. I see so many people who spend tons of money on clothes and jewelry and bags, and then when they put it all on, they look miserable. Really, who are they kidding? I think being glamorous is being happy. That glow cannot be purchased.

Favorite fashion icon clients & their bags...Lynn Wyatt has a few, but the one I love the most is a black envelope clutch she wears in the evening with a bright pink lining and her initials LSW embossed on the inside flap in gold – SO CHIC and then a beautiful pumpkin orange alligator Taylor tote. Yes, we had to make it three times to get the color just right! She taught me persistence makes perfection!

Is there something that you keep in mind when you are designing?
I ask myself...would I wear this?

My favorite bag?
Honestly, it's like asking me which of my children I love more. NOT a fair question. But, I must admit, I am in LOVE with the Mercury bag. I’m making a mini version for spring too that I will love even more!

You've asked, we're answering. Truly, if we had a dime for each time someone asked the origin of a bag's name, we'd cover our walls in navy alligator. So, here's the dish.

FAMILY NAMES

Since family - both immediate and extended - serves as the axis of our world, I decided to honor them by naming the first couple of collections after loved ones and what I like to refer to as 'fake family'. Friends who feel like family.

Thomson is my mother's given surname, Dara and Juliette are cousins in Washington and New York City respectively. More cousins: Anna, Kate & Maggie hail from Kansas, Susanne (which is now the Cynthia) is my mom. Avery my precious niece from San Antonio. Georgia is my great-grandmother and Faye is my grandmother (as well as my own middle name!). And we can't forget about the Knight side of the family, the Elaine bag was named for my mother-in-law. Taylor is my god daughter & Lila is her little sister. Little Finley,who is lucky enough to reside in Santa Barbara, is my future daughter-in-law! And let's not forget Sydney, whose parents' own the factory where all these names turn into handbags.

CLIENTS GET NAMING RIGHTS

We get calls from doting husbands who want a bag named after their wives all the time, but the only way to obtain 'naming rights' to a bag is to design it yourself. A long, and a tad more expensive process...we feel it's only right to give that little perk. Some bags are 'self-titled' creations, others will used a loved one or even a pseudonym that only they will know. Last year, we auctioned off the naming rights for a bag in the spring 08 collection to benefit the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation at their annual Catwalk for a Cure benefit's live auction. The highest bidder decided to name it after her little girl, Ellie.

Hallie - is named after a client's granddaughter. Kirby was named after a client who wanted a bag made a little bit bigger. Karen was designed as a gift for a friend, and Grant is the last name of a client who, of course, wanted the Georgia a tiny inch shorter. Lissy is the name of a client's daughter as well.

WE'VE GONE TO THE DOGS!

We are big dog lovers here at AK Inc., and so many times, we name our bags after our favorite canines - Clementine, Slim, Scooter, Luna, Victoria, Lola are all four-legged friends.

JUST BECAUSE I LIKE IT!

The Mercury...well...it was in retrograde. Everything was falling apart! I had hit two cars that day, and all samples were running late and were completely wrong. When this bag came in, and it was the only thing that was perfect, we decided to pay tribute to the moon and the stars.

And then there are the names that I just like and my husband will not let me use them on children or dogs, so I pass them along to my other children - the ones that I design and sell. Tanner, Magnolia, Piper, Adelaide and India are all in the baby name reject file, but live in exotic skin.

Well, it starts with a stork smoking a cigar with a bundle of joy dangling from its beak...just kidding. But, actually, not far off. Gestation could be nine months or more. If we're lucky, much less.

Inspiration is the first step - deciding on a shape you love and a color you can't live without. Perhaps you'll see a bag on our showroom floor that catches your fancy, like this new Oryx India in ostrich that we just unpacked pictured here, or maybe you want to create a new bag that's more 'you'. We work very hard each season to create a collection that's classic and timeless, yet very of-the-moment. But, a few of our clients have come up with designs of their own that are now a vital part of our permanent collection. And, a bonus to designing your own bag is having the 'naming rights' as well.

Necessity is next - what will the bag do? Does it need to be a tiny clutch just to complement a look, or does it need to be functional enough to fit a 'crackberry', lipstick and mad money? Does it need to be a carry-all for a new mom that includes pockets for baby bottles, diapers and Cheerios? An airplane tote to house magazines, a laptop and your OWN blanket (which we HIGHLY suggest)? Or, sometimes the bag just needs to look spectacular and make the carrier feel like a million damn dollars. Even our most functional bags do the latter, and for that, we are very proud.

Be comfy in the skin you want to be in! Most bags and small accessories can be fashioned from alligator (our most popular), python, ostrich or lizard for smaller bags. You even choose the finish...matte, glaze, millinium (medium shine), metallic washes, etc.

We then begin the process of creating the pattern. A newly created pattern may start as paper (butcher, legal pad, even a cocktail napkin will do in a pinch) and then is made into a dummy bag. The final pattern is pictured above next to the finished Sandra bag shown in Mink matte alligator. They both sit atop a full alligator skin that has been tanned, dyed and glazed. We'll get to that process in a later entry.

Once the prototype is approved, the factory receives the skin that has been painstakingly selected by the client in the exact color and finish she (or he) envisions will be the perfect addition to their collection. Weeks, and admittedly, sometimes months go by and, POOF, a bag is born. Your handcrafted masterpiece is yours!

After all that work, we find the most fun and rewarding part of the process is calling the client to let them know that their creation has arrived. Squeals of delight followed by the screeching of tires pulling in front of our atelier let us know that we're doing something right. Seeing eyes light up as they pull the couture bag out of its AK dust cover is icing on the cake.

For a designer, there's nothing better than a happy customer. Having a bag featured in Vogue, Allure or WWD is thrilling, seeing one carried by an Oscar winner is beyond fabulous, but seeing them out and about in your own neck of the woods is the bomb.

Our babies become your babies. And, then, you'll decide that your child needs a sibling...and the fun begins again.

We thought it may be fun for fans and lurkers alike to get the inside scoop on all things Alexandra Knight. What or who inspired the design of a bag? Where the hell did that name come from? Where a bag has been, what bags are being snatched up the fastest, what new skin colors are on the horizon...411 you won't find on the website. Best of all, we'll post photos of bags and accessories freshly unpacked from their temporary Federal Express homes so you can snatch them up before your friends do!

We also want to post your stories, photos, comments and the like. Become a 'guest editor' and let us know how Corralita, Victoria, Pammie or Kirby took up residence in your closet and how they're faring. One of the best parts about this company is the collaboration between ourselves and the client to create a one-of-a-kind handbag that our customers will truly adore.
